What is Sleep Apnea?

It is a serious sleep disorder where a person stops breathing during sleep. When this happens, he/she may snore loudly or make choking noises gasping for air. A person with Sleep Apnea may wake up a few times a night, or in more severe cases, several hundred times a night.

Causes

It is mainly caused by the collapse of the tissue in the back of the throat. The muscles of the upper airway relax when you fall asleep which narrows the airway, reducing the amount of air that can reach your lungs.
Sleep Apnea and general health:
When you suffer from it, your body does not receive enough oxygen and this may cause negative long-term consequences such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and depression.

Types

There are three forms of Sleep Apnea; Central (CSA), Obstructive (OSA) and Mixed (MSA). Regardless of the type, a person with it is rarely aware of having difficulty breathing and is normally recognized by others or suspected because of its effects on health of that person.

How do I know I have it?

Snoring is not a medical condition, but loud snoring –especially when it is combined with daytime fatigue could be a sign of sleep apnea. Untreated may be dangerous to one’s health. If you suspect that you or a loved one might have, please call our office to schedule an appointment.

Symptoms

It can be difficult to identify it on your own since it only happens during your sleep, but if you experience one or more of the following symptoms, then you need to see a doctor: daytime sleepiness, fatigue, morning headaches, slow reflexes, poor concentration and in increased risk of accidents.

What can increase the risk factors of Sleep Apnea?

You have a higher risk of Sleep Apnea if you are overweight, male, over the age of 50, a smoker or have high blood pressure.
